Area Exhibitors Do Well at Illinois State Fair

Exhibitors from around the Effingham area did well at different competitions at the Illinois State Fair.

JoAnn Ullrich, of Altamont, picked up a first, three seconds and a third. In Division II -- General Textiles, Ullrich won the Baby Quilt, Stamped Kit and took second in the Afghan-Crocheted In 1 Piece, Infants Carriage Robe or Crib Blanket-Crocheted and Miscellaneous Bread. She got third in the Hobby Division Antiques with a Bottle-Commercial

In the Antique Division, Scott Beal, of Mason, picked up three first place finishes and a second. Beal won the Miniature Kerosene or Other Oil Lamps, the Small World War II Memorabilia and the Water Sets (Pitcher and 2 Tumblers). He was second in the Tumblers Pattern Glass.

Kurt Becker, of Altamont, took three first place finishes, three seconds and two thirds. Becker won the Glass, Pressed, Colored, the Illinois State Fair souvenir or ribbons before 1950 and the Most Unusual Antique. He took second in the Glass Art, the Postcards and Illinois State Fair Souvenirs or Ribbons after 1950. Third place finishes came in the Carnival Glass and Milk Glass.

Kimberly Tarrant, of Altamont, was a winner in the Berry Set, Bowl and 2 Saucers. She took second in the Religious Books. She finished third five times in the Dairy Jars, the Postcards and Tins-Commerical or Tobacco in the Antique Division. She took two thirds in the Craft Division for Seasonal Decorations Other Than Christmas and Wreath Made from Wood or Other Materials.

In the Junior Horse Show, Stacey Westjohn of Altamont, Rachel Higgs of Dieterich and Deborah Haarman of Effingham captured several top three finishes.

Westjohn won first place in the $100 AQHA Youth 3-Year-Old Geldings and the $100 AQHA Youth 3-Year-Old Mares in Division IV -- Western Horse Quarter Horse.  She won in the Halter and Showmanship. She took second three times in the $100 AQHA 3-Year-Old Mares and the Grand and Reserve Champion AQHA Youth Mare. The took second in the Land of Lincoln Halter in the $200 Land of Lincoln AQHA Gelding 3-years and older. She finished third in the $100 AQHA 3-Year-Old Geldings.

Haarman had six first place finishes. She competed in Division IV -- Western Horse Quarter Horse Division. She won the $100 AQHA Amateur Aged Mares, $100 AQHA Mare 4-Years and Over, the Grand and Reserve Champion Amateur Mares and the Grand and Reserve Champion AQHA Mares. She took first in the Land of Lincoln Halter $100 Land of Lincoln AQHA Mare Three Years and Over and the Land of Lincoln Grand Champoin AQHA Mare.

Higgs competed in  Division III -- Junior Horse Show. She won the Reserve Champion 13-14 Years of  Age, the Western Pleasure Over 56" 13-14 Years of Age and the Western Showmanship Horse or Pony 13-14 Years of Age.
