Stewardson-Strasburg school board members Wednesday voted to cover the cost of tuition for students who will take an automotive course through Lake Land College.

Stew-Stras Superintendent Michele Lindenmeyer said three or four students will take the course that will be offered at the start of the school day on campus in Mattoon, and then will head to Stew-Stras for the balance of the day. The automotive class is a dual credit class, meaning the students will accrue college and high school credit.

The Board also approved new guidelines and hourly wages for school bus drivers. Lindenmeyer said the guidelines reduce the hours of drivers and change their rate of pay.

There are still no applications on file for a Special Education aide position, so the Board agreed to leave the application period open, but also authorized Lindenmeyer to act to hire additional aides as needed to be ready for the start of the school year. There was also discussion with the Neoga school district on sharing some school nurse services, but no decision.

Board members heard that work on the baseball diamond will allow not only high school but junior high baseball games to be played at the school facilities, rather than in Stewardson. Work on the softball field is still on hold; it's been just too wet to get the work done.

A reminder that an event is scheduled for August 11 to meet the new school principal Justin Deters, to auction off Stew-Stras uniforms since the new Hatchets uniforms will go into use with the new school year, and to enjoy a cookout put together by the school's FFA chapter.
