Effingham County Sheriff David Mahon has been recognized as the American Legion Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for the state of Illinois. The recognition came at the 97th Annual American Legion Department of Illinois Convention in Springfield.

Sheriff Mahon was chosen from a number of candidates nominated from throughout the state. The award plaque reads, "Our selection was based on your devotion to duty, community involvement, caring for others and love of country." The sheriff will now advance to a regional competition and, if chosen, on to the national level.
