While renovation of the former 5th/3rd Bank facility into the new Effingham Public Library continues, library officials continue to finalize guidelines for using the new facility.

The Library Board this week changed the materials checkout guidelines. Once in the new facility, all materials can be checked out for two weeks with three renewals possible. In the current facility, there are three different lengths of checkouts, depending on the materials involved.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the change should make it easier for library patrons to remember when materials need to be returned.

The Board also amended the guidelines for violations of library policies. For most violations, the first offense will mean no use for one day, the second offense no use for one month, and the third offense no use for one year. However, regarding internet use, anyone seen viewing inappropriate images will be suspended for one day for a first offense, but a second violation will mean a ban from the library for life. Such bans will be reviewed annually. Again, this change will take effect with the move into the new facility.

Library Board members discussed outsourcing evening technical support with a program known as Lazerware and then hire a part-time staff member to supervise evening hours.

As to progress on the new library home, McKay said the project remains on track, with carpeting arriving soon, ceramic tile due to arrive, and cabinets being hung. She said the plan is still to close the current library home and utilize a temporary home in City Hall during August and then make the move to the new facility in time for a September opening.

McKay was also congratulated for having been named Illinois Librarian of the Year. She'll be formally honored at a ceremony in Peoria later this year.
