Progress is being made on the conversion of the former 5th/3rd Bank building into the new city library home, and on fundraising to cover the cost of the project.

Library Director Amanda McKay told the library board Monday night that fundraising is now 78% complete toward their $2 million goal.

As far as the building conversion project, bills were paid to bring the job to 50% complete. McKay said painting and lighting is finished in the basement and the ceiling tiles are ready to be put in place. Painting is underway on the first floor, and the drywall is up on the second floor with taping and mudding underway.

McKay said the project is 10 weeks from completion. In the meantime, a list is being compiled of how to provide services during the move from the current location on Market Avenue to the new building on North Third Street.

McKay thinks the move could take from three weeks to a month to complete. During that time, essential services will be provided in the City Council chambers at City Hall. The move is likely to take place in August, but exact dates aren't yet known. A mention that the services will only be provided from 9am to 5pm weekdays during the move.

As to the current library facility, McKay said there has been some interest, but no offers have been put on the table. The revenue from the sale of the current building is a piece of the financing puzzle for the library conversion project.
