Crash Causes Traffic Backup Monday

A crash leading into the interstate construction zone on Effingham's north side backed up traffic for more than a half hour Monday evening.

The crash occurred two miles east of Effingham on I-70 westbound just before 5pm. State police report a a pickup truck pulling a trailer driven by 44-year-old John Coats of Hotchkiss, Colorado was pulling into the one-lane construction area when the trailer was struck by a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Tonneni Garcia of Indianapolis. After striking the trailer, Garcia's vehicle struck construction barriers on either side of the lane and then struck a guardrail head-on.

Garcia was injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

Garcia was cited for DUI, no valid driver's license, following too closely, not wearing a seat belt and illegal transportation of liquor.
