Members of the Lake Land College Student Government Association were in Springfield for Student Advocacy Day in support of Illinois legislation that highlights access and affordability for community colleges.

The topic at hand was House Joint Resolution 35, which highlights the importance of access and affordability of community colleges, especially for adult students. According to Senior Executive to the President Jean Anne Grunloh, the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) tasked student government participants with developing language for the resolution.

“Participating in this annual event really allows students to get involved in legislation that will directly affect them and their peers,” Grunloh explained.

According to Lake Land College Student Trustee Adam Doty, Beecher City, Student Advocacy Day gives students like him a good sense of what happens on a state level.

“Overall, this was a very constructive day and it’s important for us as student government members to be a part of the bigger picture,” Doty said.

Students met directly with state legislators to ask questions and express their views about issues that pertain to community college education.

“This resolution gives our law makers the opportunity to officially support community colleges and make it known to everyone how vital community colleges are to the state of Illinois,” Doty said.”
