Nate Bible, Louisville, has been named the 2015 Adult Student of the Year by Lake Land College.

(NATE BIBLE WITH NOMINATOR MARLENE MEEK)

Like many non-traditional students, Bible overcame a lot of challenges and barriers which kept him from reaching his academic and career goals early in life. But according to nominator Marlene Meek, administrative assistant to Student Life, Bible chose to come to Lake Land College to further his education and learn skills for a better career after his previous employer downsized.

As a renewable energy student, Bible works as a part-time wind technician for the Technology Division. According to nominator Joe Tillman, renewable energy instructor and Technology Division chair, Bible demonstrates a strong commitment to education.

“While Nate is very much an applied, hands-on wind technician, he has done very well in many of the other academic classes in the renewable energy curriculum,” said Tillman. “Nate has also been instrumental in assisting the college in the repairs of the wind turbines as lead technician of the college’s group of wind turbine technicians.”

Bible holds a 3.5 cumulative GPA and has been on the Presidents List the entire time he has studied at Lake Land.

According to Meek, Bible has shown great leadership skills through his involvement with the Student Activity Board.

“Nate is the co-chair of the Student Activity Board,” explained Meek.  “This position requires patience, empathy, perseverance, accountability and reliability, all of which Nate has.  Nate has been on the Student Activity Board for the past two years and has always been eager to take on leadership responsibilities.

Beyond school responsibilities, Bible is currently considering being a big brother for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and has applied to be a volunteer fireman for Bible Grove.

The award was given as part of Adult Week at Lake Land College, which celebrates non-traditional students for their commitment and determination to return to school after some time away, or for many, for the first time in their lives.

Other students nominated for this honor include: Zhong Xiang Ji, Neoga; Richard “Audi” Swinford, Pairs; Sue Shumway, Mattoon; Kim Colbert, Mattoon; Brandy Vander Pol, Olney; Amanda Arena, Mattoon; Brenda Scott, Greenup; Darrell Fox, Windsor; Kenny Hsu, Charleston; Julia Fasking, Mattoon; and Katherine Zike, Mattoon, IL
