Effingham County Sheriff Dave Mahon would like to advise the public of a phone scam that is occurring in our area.

Several residents are receiving a phone message from an automated machine directing them to call the IRS at a 415 or 424 area code.  The message states that if the call is not made, there will be repercussions from the IRS.  Some calls threaten police action if the return call is not made.

The Sheriff would like to remind the public to never give out personal information over the phone. If you receive a phone number that you are uncertain of, you can run a check on the number through your search engine on the internet, (like Google or Yahoo). This will often disclose if the number is legitimate or not.

The Sheriff’s Office has taken numerous reports of identity theft this tax season and they are asking all residents to continue to safeguard their personal information.
