Ammunition was found in the backpack of a student at Teutopolis Junior High School.

Effingham County Sheriff Dave Mahon said a teacher at the school discovered .22 caliber ammunition in the backpack Wednesday morning. The teacher notified building principal Pat Drees, who contacted Effingham County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Higgs, who is the School Resource Officer.

Deputy Higgs removed the student from the classroom and contacted the student's parents. He then contacted the Sheriff's Office and a search of the grounds was conducted, looking for a weapon. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

Sheriff Mahon said, "The purposes of having School Resource Officers assigned to the schools are many, but providing safety for our students is probably the most important of the roles we perform."

The Sheriff said, "I would like to commend Deputy Higgs for his quick and professional response to this incident. He is a credit to our School Resource Officer Program and the Sheriff's Department in general. At no time were students placed in any danger, and the situation was resolved with very minimal disruption to the school day."
