The budget fix is in for the state of Illinois.

Today, the Illinois Senate passed a measure in step with the House that fills in a budget gap left for the rest of this fiscal year. The state was facing a $1.6 billion shortfall and would have run out of funds to pay for prison guards, day care subsidies and court reporters.

The budget calls for fund sweeps to raise about $1.3 billion and then a 2.25% cut to state programs. Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno says that the budget isn’t want everyone would want, but it completes a task of getting to the end of fiscal year with critical programs intact.

The bill passed with both Republican and Democratic votes. Governor Bruce Rauner hails the vote as an important start and in a press release says the General Assembly is helping set a new tone for what can be achieved in Springfield.
