The crash of a vehicle northwest of Effingham Monday morning could have been the result of a medical emergency.

A vehicle driven by 68-year-old Willam Wilke, Jr. of Effingham was headed into Effingham on Illinois Routes 32/33 about 5:30am when the vehicle swerved off the roadway to the right for unknown reasons. The vehicle then struck the guardrail.

Wilke was reported injured and was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. He was later transferred to Carle Hospital in Urbana where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are attempting to determine whether Wilke had suffered a medical emergency that caused the crash, rather than injuries from the crash causing Wilke's death.
