Helen Matthes Library will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility on Tuesday, December 2 at 10am at 200 N. 3rd Street in Effingham.

The event, which is open to everyone will include a special story time and "demolition ceremony" for children.

The groundbreaking marks the start of the construction phase for the 27,000 square foot facility, with Helen Matthes Library due to move in during the summer of 2015. At a special board meeting in October, the Library Board voted to accept the lowest bid, made by Poettker Construction of Breese, to refurbish the former 5th/3rd Bank into its new home. The library has raised $1.3 million of its $2 million fundraising goal towards construction costs of the new library, with $700,000 to go.

Refreshments will be provided and parking is available. No invitation or library card is needed to attend. For more details, visit www.effinghamlibrary.org or phone the library at 342-2464, extension 3.
