Martin Siemer of Teutopolis was elected Tuesday as a judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit.

The Republican defeated Associate Judge Ericka Sanders of Centralia 41,689 to 33,666 in balloting through the nine-county circuit, including an 8,574 to 3,435 margin in Effingham County.

Siemer said he was "surprised" at the margin of his victory and was "humbled" by the results.

The election was held to fill a vacancy created by the retirement earlier this year of Judge Sherri Tungate of Clay County.

Judge Sanders will remain on the bench as an Associate Circuit Judge.
