Five people were injured when a pickup truck drove through the south wall of the old Shumway Grade School Saturday morning.

The old grade school is currently in use as a food pantry/ministry. Distribution of food and goods to help families in need was underway when the crash took place.

The driver of the pickup truck, 91-year-old Archie Baker of rural Effingham, was not injured. Baker told those at the scene that the truck took off after he started it and drove into the building.

The five people inside the building who were injured are 31-year-old Philip Courtney of Watson, 32-year-old Dawn Erickson of Watson, 21-year-old Stella Tate of Effingham, 63-year-old Elaine Mitchell of Effingham, and a 16-year-old male from Altamont. All five were taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

The building is owned by Emil Lagerhausen of Shumway and is utilized by Enduring Freedom Ministries. The ministry calls the building "Shumway Freedom House". The ministry holds regularly-scheduled distributions of food and clothing and customers make appointments to participate in the distributions. One of those distributions was going on at the time of the incident.
