A St. Elmo man has been sentenced to four years in prison for a drug offense.

27-year-old Matthew Koeberlein was sentenced after pleading guilty to possession with intent to deliver ecstasy. Koeberlein originally was charged with manufacturing of the pills, but the charge was reduced in exchange for the guilty plea.

Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler said another consideration in agreeing to the lesser offense was that Koeberlein had no prior prison time, and no significant criminal history.

Koeberlein's co-defendant, Levi Mahon of St. Elmo, was also sentenced to four years in prison in the case, in September.

The two men were arrested after attempting a transaction with a confidential informant working with police.
