Two people were injured in a crash south of Effingham on the interstate Monday night.

The crash occurred about 10pm on I-57 southbound at the Little Wabash River bridge, north of the Watson-Mason interchange.

Watson Fire Chief Matt Kulesza reported a car skidded out of control, went across the passing lane and struck a bridge embankment, then went back across the roadway and struck the driving lane side of the bridge and then was rear-ended by a semi.

State police say the car was driven by 18-year-old Brandon Rehbock of Carbondale. Rehbock was taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment, while the passenger, 18-year-old Caitlyn Cassidy of Carbondale, was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana. The semi driver, 50-year-old Douglas Korleski of Searcy, Arkansas, was not injured.

Southbound I-57 in the area of the crash was down to one-lane travel for over half an hour while the vehicles involved in the crash were removed.

Illinois State Police, Effingham City-County Ambulance Service, and the Effingham County Sheriff's Department worked with Watson firefighters on the crash.
