The St. Elmo Public Library received the 2012 Community Service Excellence Award recently from C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation Board of Directors. Billie Enlow and Kim Karnes were present at the ceremony to receive the award.
Every month during the school year, the Altamont Head Start class visited the St. Elmo Public Library on field trips for reading and activities. Megan Kuenstler, Altamont Head Start teacher, stated, "They set up the story time so it was easy access to all our children. They had chairs for each child to sit in when we arrived. They also had a smaller table set up for one of our students in a wheelchair so she could enjoy the activities as well.
"The staff members of the St. Elmo Public Library were very friendly and enthusiastic with the children. They worked around the class schedule and planned their story time around classroom discussions. Library personnel would read several books to the Head Start children on each visit and sometimes spent money out of their own pockets to provide learning activites and gifts for the children afterwards."
