Freshmen are starting classes at the University of Illinois and their wallets are taking a  hit.

A survey done by the Champaign News Gazette finds the school ranks second among public universities in the Big 10 for costs. Northwestern tops the overall list. The private school costs $47,000 annually. Penn State is the most expensive public university at $17,000 a year, followed by Illinois at $15,000 a year.

Illinois ranked third in costs last year among 34 public universities in a survey by the Association of American Universities.
