The St. Elmo school board has ratified a contract for the coming school year with the St. Elmo Education Association, representing district teachers.

The approval came at a special meeting Friday.

A release from both parties said there were several small language items addressed, while the larger items to agree on were a salary increase and newly-created sick bank language requested by the teachers.

Highlights of the agreement include:

--a 1.5% salary increase with several cells in the salary schedule being frozen at the 2013-14 rate. The staff members eligible to move vertically on the salary schedule were allowed their step increases

--for staff members who take the District health insurance, there was a $10/month increase in the amount paid by the District

--The Board approved sick bank language requested by the teachers. The sick leave bank will allow SEA members to donate sick days to the bank once a year with those days made eligible for utilization by any SEA member who has a serious illness, but has exhausted all of their own personal sick leave. The employee must not be receiving any type of TRS or other disability to be eligible to utilize the sick bank. Further restrictions and language concerning the sick bank is spelled out in the contract.

Also at the Friday meeting, the St. Elmo Board employed Michelle Miller as half-time teacher/half-time paraprofessional for the coming school term, and employed Ken Berg as a regular route bus driver.
