25-year-old Heaven Davis was sentenced Thursday morning to three years in prison for her actions that led to the death of her infant daughter.

Davis was arrested in February for leaving one-year-old Addison Scott of St. Elmo unattended with a person under age 14 and out of her sight, which authorities say was the proximate cause of Addison's death.

Davis in May entered an open plea of guilty, which meant the judge had leeway in how she would be sentenced, but the prosecution and Judge Allan Bennett agreed to a cap of five years in prison for the offense. Probation was an option.

Prosecutors asked for the full five-year sentence, while the defense sought probation.
