Both drivers were injured when two semis collided near Vandalia Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened at 4:45pm on westbound I-70. State police say a rig driven by 49-year-old Michael Zickafoose of Huber Heights, Ohio rear-ended a slower-moving semi in a construction zone. Zickafoose's rig ran off the roadway into a ditch.

Zickafoose was airlifted from the scene to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. The other driver, 62-year-old Dennis Smalley of Traverse City, Michigan, was also injured and was taken to Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia for treatment.

Zickafoose was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash. Traffic at the crash scene was stopped for some time Tuesday afternoon.
