Indianapolis Aunt and Niece Arrested in Effingham on Forgery Counts

An aunt and niece from Indianapolis were arrested by Effingham city police Monday on forgery counts.

35-year-old Sharmica Hanyard and 20-year-old Raven Hanyard were arrested after allegedly attempting to pass counterfeit $100 bills at two Effingham businesses.

City police detective Scott Volpi said they've received three or four different reports in the past several weeks of attempts to pass counterfeit bills, both from store personnel in the register and from the bank where the deposits are made.

Sharmica Hanyard was also arrested on a count of driving while her license is suspended, while Raven Hanyard was also arrested on a count of unlawful possession of cannabis.

Both aunt and niece made ther first appearances in court Tuesday morning. They are next due in court on July 17.
