Vandalia Woman Killed in Crash at St. Elmo

A two car crash in St. Elmo Friday evening claimed the life of a Vandalia woman.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:44pm Friday June 27th on Rt. 40 at Interstate Drive.

A vehicle driven by 51 year old Irma Viramontes of Farina crossed over into the west bound lane striking a car driven by 66 year old Phyllis Torbeck of Vandalia.

St. Elmo Fire Dept. and Altamont Ambulance responded to the scene. Viramontes was transported to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment. Torbeck was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:48pm by Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen.

The crash remains under investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Coroner.
