Special Olympics State Games Open Friday

(THE GROUP OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETES AND THE MEMBERS OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE TORCH RUN WEDNESDAY)

The Special Olympics Illinois State Games open Friday and a number of local athletes will be competing. A schedule of events can be found here.

Here's a look at who will be competing and their events:

Carissa Bean: running long jump and 200 meter dash

Jay Borries: 400 meter run and running long jump

Angie Haarmann: running long jump and shot put

Kraig Dahnke: running long jump and shot put

Shane Soltwedel: running long jump and 100 meter dash

Macey Williamson: 200 meter dash

Trevor Petersen: 100 meter dash

Emily Stead: softball throw and 200 meter dash

Tom Frichtl: 400 meter run and running long jump

Jamie Mendenhall: 100 meter dash and softball throw

Borries and Frichtl will compete in the 400 on Friday; the other events are scheduled Saturday on the campus of Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal.

Illinois State Police and other members of the law enforcement community participated Wednesday on a Torch Run for Special Olympics with one leg of the run leaving Effingham and all of the legs converging on the Illinois State campus.
