Jasper County volunteers are continuing a long tradition in the county to recognize over 2,000 veterans buried in cemeteries throughout Jasper County.

The Jasper County American Legion provides flags for the various groups who will be visiting the cemeteries again this year to flag the graves.  Jasper County 4-H members flag over 900 graves and local volunteers from the American Legion, area churches, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts make sure the remainder of the graves are flagged for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

The American Legion makes every effort to document all the veterans in the cemeteries, but as stones age some of the names become increasingly difficult to read and occasionally a veteran's grave may be missed.  All veterans' graves should be flagged before noon on Saturday.  If a Jasper County veteran's grave has been missed, phone the Jasper American Legion at 2pm at 618-783-2622 and a local volunteer will see that your family member is recognized, or extra flags will be placed at the entrance of the cemetery, feel free to take one of those extra flags and place it on your loved one's grave.
