Illinois Senate Democrats are getting behind a new formula for funding education.

State Senator Andy Manar says it's no secret that the current funding formula protects inequity and, in the end, it's the students who suffer.

The plan aims to streamline all the current funding sources into one formula.  Right now, only 44% of the state's aid is distributed to schools based on need.  The new formula would ensure that 92 cents of every dollar in state aid is weighted and distributed based on need.

Supporters say it's a more fair system that will essentially close the funding gaps across the state.
